Universität der Künste - Berlin

In its present form the Universität der Künste - Berlin University of the Arts - was established by law in 1975. Basically it consists of two institutions with long traditions: the Hochschule fur Bildende Künste, dating back to the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts, foundend in 1669, and the Hochschule fur Musik, established in 1869. Today the Universität der Künste ecompasses pratically all disciplines of the arts including fine arts, visual arts, design, architecture, music and the performing arts plus teachers education for all school levels in fine arts and music. The Universitat der Kunste is unique in Germany in its broad disciplinary scope. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees in art theory and art history, in musicology, architecture and education. The Universität der Künste has almost 5.000 students, among them many from abroad. It is organised in five Colleges: Fine Arts, Design and Architecture, Performing Arts, Education and Social Sciences. Libraries, workshops and other facilities including studios and practice rooms are open throughout the year.
